CHICANO CHANNEL PRESENTS: DO I HAVE TO BUY YOU A BEER TO VOTE?

The question was why Chicanos loathe getting involved in politics or vote and also how the Chicano Channel would convince Chicano/as to do it.  Some went so far as to say we had to throw a barbecue and beer pachanga in the middle of Chicano neighborhoods to let them know we are there and to talk to them about the importance of being involved in politics, face to face.  Hijole, really?  What’s so difficult about realizing the importance of being aware of what’s going on out there and voting?  Ultimate power lies in politics, that’s why people that are already rich run for office, because they know the potential is there to make themselves, their families, friends and perhaps even their cultures as a whole, even richer.

There are more Chicanos than Blacks, yet the brothers and sisters get involved and vote to a much larger degree, which is probably why there is a brother in the “House”.  This tells you what Chicanos could do if they did the same, but we shouldn’t expect anyone to have to buy us beer or barbecue to show us the way, the way could not be clearer.  Politics can be a public good, leaders can make policies that actually help regular people and businesses not only get along, but thrive together.  However, make no mistake about it, political leaders can also help shape new industries and new markets with all new players in it, including perhaps, more Chicanos and not just the old guard.  It seems the younger Chicanos who are getting some college under their belt, are getting this point at least.
